Fables of the Reconstruction

After years of using Pair and Dreamhost to host my various half-baked web projects, I am switching. Let me tell you, moving hosts is a rat-finkin’ pain in the ass.

Why go through the bother? It’s a long story.

I started with Pair, and for many years I was happy with them. But Pair doesn’t want adult sites, mostly due to volume and technical reasons. A few years ago, I was thinking about a doing some web-work that was adult, so I found Dreamhost. I was a man paying two companies to host web pages.

I didn’t consolidate on Dreamhost mostly due to laziness.

When I first set up the TalkAboutUSA web forum, I did it on Pair. But I found out Pair limits the number of MySQL connections you can have at one time. Our visitors started getting errors. Pair has no upgrade path, except for renting a dedicated box.

So TalkAboutUSA moved to DreamHost. But DreamHost didn’t have great database performance, and they meter the database usage, and charge for overages. Once I started doing somewhat regular backups, I found out I could start incurring overages pretty easily. I was already at a somewhat expensive plan, and I wasn’t happy with the speed we were getting.

While I think our forum is quite successful, on a technical side it isn’t really resource hungry. It’s a small to mid-size PHPBB forum. Yes, it leans on the database, but we aren’t talking high transaction volume or anything.

So it was time to move again. But I cannot bring myself to pay for three web hosts. As a matter of fact, I just want to pay for one. And not nearly as much as I’ve been paying.

Reluctantly, I am leaving the high class level of hosting companies like Dreamhost and Pair for slightly more humble digs. But TalkAboutUSA is already running a lot better, and I don’t have to worry about overages. I am getting good service at the new place, though getting settled in is an adjustment. In the end, my hosting costs will go from about $80 a month, to $25 a month, a pretty good savings.

But there is no small labor involved in actually getting set up. I’m off of Dreamhost entirely now, but I never really had much running there in the first place. Moving the Pair stuff is messier. All the is going first, and that’s not gone smoothly at all, and it’s still a work in progress. I apologize to fans of Babes and Beer and A Clan Lord Journal (and their authors). I’ll get things back up for good as soon as I can.

It’s a top priority. But I am not looking forward to moving this domain. Ugh.
