Always pack two

A mother and her young daughter board the E train going uptown at Penn Station. The little girl plops down on the seat while Mom sits and rummages through her bag.

“I spy with my little eye,” says the girl,” something that begins with the letter M.”

Mom keeps digging in her bag. “I’m not playing,” she says. “I told you, I need a few minutes of quiet time.”

“Aww, c’mon,” pleads the daughter, her eyes actively taking in the sights of the busy subway car.

The mother produces a handheld electronic game from her handbag. She starts to play, focused intently on the little screen.

The daughter glances over, looking disappointed.

“But Mom! Let’s play something we can play together!”

O brave new world.
