New York City meets Munich

I’ll get that glass

A Portland company is building a system for point-of-sale payments using fingerprint scanners:

The privately held Oakland company, which has spent the last six years quietly developing an electronic payment system that uses fingerprint scans, is moving slowly into the limelight as a select group of retailers begin tests of the system this year.

Some people might think this is a bad thing, with privacy implications and all, but I feel differently. I think this is fantastic news. It might make me move to Portland to be one of the first people to actively use it.

Especially since it only takes a bit of cleverness and some jello to fool a fingerprint scanner. I’ll just hang out at an upscale bar, and lift prints from the glasses of the rich and famous. A new career is born!

(Both juicy links from Boing Boing, about a week apart, interestingly enough.)
